This weekend is all about doffing the caps to the people who bring the music to us all. Whilst DJs are undoubted gatekeepers in the musical world the job of the record label, many helmed by DJs themselves, represents a crucial cog in the process of delivering us music. So this weekend brings two of the most influential in the genre down to Manchester, complete with the artists - and in once case the lynchpin - behind the label.
Friday night sees Turbo recordings in the building. The brainchild of legendary Canadian DJ and producer Tiga, the label has been one of the most revered and iconic imprints in modern dance music, influential in the development of electro clash and pushing bass-soaked techno forward. Tiga, fresh from the honour of producing the hundredth instalment of Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels instalment, naturally headlines the event.
Joining him will be Duke Dumont, the spinner whose trusty re-rubs of pop mainstays like Lily Allen, Bat For Lashes and the Mystery Jets dovetails with a reverential status as global selector par excellence, not least with Fabric where he has built up a fervent partnership. Fresh faced Scottish duo Clouds complete the bill. Up in Spektrum, bass-driven beat masters Chow Down and Dark Sky take over for the night.
The limelight the following evening falls on the huge presence of Cadenza, Luciano’s scintillating emporium of house and techno. Much like the master’s DJ sets, the music released is a slew of tracks permeated by the European and Latin influences that ground many of the artists involved. This is persistently emblematic with German groove shaman Reboot who headlines the show with his blend of acerbic drums and off kilter rhythms.
He’s joined by Detroit legend Kenny Larkin, the Motor City native currently enjoying a revitalisation at the pinnacle of the music’s zeitgeist. Andrea Olivia also represents the Swiss label, whilst some home-grown talent in the shape of Sankeys’ resident and Kaluki promoter Ellesse gives Manchester its own spotlight.
