A changing of the guard......

This week’s continuing Kaluki 5th anniversary celebrations took a slightly different form with all our powers being focussed solely on the main room altar. We were honoured to present a joint onslaught, the Sankeys main room not only played host to our usual residents and headline acts but also allowed a basement debut for the Treehouse gang making their way down the staircase from Spektrum......It went off......
Things got underway with JOZEF K; our powerhouse resident continues to build up a head of steam at our weekly gatherings. Once again, true to form, he proved a perfect welcome for those first in the venue with his underground audio offerings.
With the room primed Jozef handed over to the first of our guest stars at 1AM. MIC NEWMAN, one of the most promising Australians to break out from an ever growing dance scene down under, proved just why superstars such as Laurent Garnier and Giles Peterson have been heaping praise on his particular take on deep house music. No doubt those who witnessed this set now share a similar opinion. Believe the hype.

Not to be outdone Newman handed over to our second headliner, EKKOHAUS, playing an hour long live set that continued a now groove laden main room soundscape. Choosing to delve into his house back catalogue rather than focus on the newest of tracks doing the rounds he skilfully satisfied the needs of the people in attendance, his set went down a treat.

This all meant that the back end of the night, the back end of our weekend, was ready for some old friends to join us on the turntables. Returning for a two hour set, something that hasn’t happened for a few months, OD MUSIQUE showed us things that conjured memories of ‘Disco Electronica’ nights gone by. Keeping the crowd firmly rooted on the dance floor the glowing neon basement was teetering on berserk.

Outside the sun may have been rising but inside our place the darkness continued for a little while longer. For our final hour we thought it was about time we rewarded the TREEHOUSE residents, PLASTIC CO. and JAY SMITH, who have been so brilliantly hosting Spektrum over the past few weeks. And boy did they grab their chance for a basement debut with both hands. Exploring the choice Treehouse edits from recent weeks whilst also mixing in a couple of classics (such as A Guy Called Gerald’s ‘Voodoo Ray’), the celebratory atmosphere culminated at 6 with the final tune of the weekend being offered to the memory of Winehouse.....Back to Black, fade to black......

What Friday was made for......

Events at last week's 'Thank F**k i'ts Friday' got underway with special guests RILEY AND DURRANT warming up those who arrived soon after doors opened. Spinning their own edits of some old school crowd pleasers such as Nightcrawlers' 'Push the Feeling On' they encouraged the early birds to get the dance floor heated.

At 1 we welcomed our main headliner, MOGUAI, to the DJ booth. coming from his day job producing tracks for the likes of Girls Aloud and Sugababes he brought the noise to those cutting loose on the Spektrum dance floor. Interestingly he opted to use two ipads to manage his cues and samples instead of decks. In doing so he allowed his audience to hear how the progressions in DJ technology are affecting the way clubbing crowds are being fed their energy. By the kinetic scenes witnessed here such an evolution seemed to be welcomed.

From 3 resident Dutch Rudder put in yet another significant stint to bring this week's party to an end. Playing tunes with a darker edge he provided the perfect backdrop for those still raving deep into Saturday morning.

A big thank you to those who made it down last week...... Roll on next Friday......

So, when you clock off remember, you worked your arse off this week, you deserve it.

Weekend worship......

With Manchester still reeling from July 9th’s special Saturday party (see last week’s post) the next in our summer long program of Kaluki Saturdays emerged onto the horizon. And you thought last week was good......
11pm, cue it up, press play. The night’s beginnings gave us a chance to witness ‘Jozef and his techno-coloured dream tunes’ as our newest resident JOZEF K christened basement proceedings with one of his signature warm up sets that have got those in the know talking frantically. News seemed to spread fast as by 12 the club was already packed.

The night’s first headliner MIGUEL CAMPBELL took the baton at 1 and ran with it. Showcasing groove heavy nuggets from a range of his Hot Creations teammates, the beautiful people filling the room just had to get down. High hats galore captured the room and placed it in the palm of Miguel’s hand. Weekend insanity was spreading and we had the sweating walls to prove it. The surging ice cannons weren’t just serving a visual purpose on this night but a much needed practical one too.

Spektrum, and the week’s Treehouse showcase starring JOSIF, offered respite for those getting dirty in the basement. The intimate setting of low glowing ceiling and leather seating proved the perfect nesting ground for those needing something a little different. Micron DJ RONNY GILL welcomed those venturing up the staircase with some tech disco offerings before it was time for JOSIF to play a set Treehouse’s head honcho Jay called “possibly the best set we’ve ever had at Treehouse”. Special praise indeed, edits of tracks such as Jamie Woon’s ‘Night Air’ going some way to explaining why.

By 3 there was a treat in store. Special guest DENIZ KURTEL arrived to make her Sankeys debut to a crammed main room. Along with artists such as Laura Jones, Cassy and Heidi, Kurtel joins the ranks of some serious girl power leading the music at Sankeys over recent months, not to mention the rest of the world. Playing live for one hour she kept it short but sweet as she dealt out gem after gem, not least her own track, ‘the L word’, a recent firm favourite with us.
For most 4am would signal a wind down, time to get the heels off and rest those weary legs, not at our gaff. ELLESSE’s closing set shifted things up another gear for those looking to squeeze every bit of joy from their weekend. Dishing out crowd pleasers such as the Jamie Jones remix of ‘Hungry for the Power’ as well as closing with his own creation ‘New York Boy’ our resident warmed himself up nicely for his own imminent birthday celebrations and a flight to the White Isle for a slot at this Wednesday’s ‘Carnival’ party at sister club, Sankeys Ibiza.
It seems Kaluki smashed it again...... Roll on next Saturday......

That Friday feeling......

Friday saw Sankeys’ summer offering, Thank F**k it’s Friday, present another lineup to mark the end of the working week in Manchester.
Due to an unforeseen burst pipe in the Sankeys basement the party took place upstairs within the intimate surroundings of Spektrum where the light ceiling glowed in time with some serious party house and electro.
Warming up for those arriving early doors DUTCH RUDDER took the role of pacemaker for the punters drinking to freedom from their horrible bosses, for two days at least.

Things were shaping up nicely and by 1 the night’s headliner ALEX KENJI was ready to take over mixing duties. For the next 3 hours he proved the point yet again that there is no better way to cut loose at the end of a week’s slog then to let the hair down with the rest of Manchester’s pleasure seekers. The crowd had the Spektrum booth surrounded, like moths to Kenji’s flame, and his tunes didn’t disappoint. High fives all around.
Those who stuck around till 4 were rewarded with a double-dutch helping, being left skipping to Dutch Rudder once again, closing the night with an hour of tunes that went all the way up to 11......Roll on next Friday......

Coming Saturday.......

This Saturday the ball keeps rolling as we take great pleasure in hosting Kaluki’s continued 5th Anniversary celebrations. This week will be starring Deniz Kurtel and Miguel Campbell and they will be joined by residents Ellesse and Jozef K. As an extra treat for you lucky party animals Treehouse will be hosting in Spektrum with special guest Jozif taking to the decks alongside regulars Plastic Co. and Jay Smith. Pull your fingers out, get down.

Part of our weekend never dies.........

With the rumblings of Leeds’ ‘Cocoon in the Park’ still echoing over the Pennines Sankeys opened its doors on Saturday night for a party to rival any Yorkshire mud bath.

Welcomed to our legendary basement were two men whose tracks have been gracing the laptops and turntables of our friends orchestrating the Kaluki madness over the previous months; David August, whose monster ‘Moving Home’ has become synonymous with the start of our summer 2011, and Solomun, arriving fresh off the back of killer sets at last month’s Sonar festival with his Diynamic label mates.

Kaluki proceedings kicked off with Sankey’s pied piper of choice, Ellesse, whose own emerging star continues to rise, and with opening sets like this it is easy to see why. Dropping diamond offerings such as the Tale of Us remix of Whomadewho’s ‘Every Minute Alone’ the club’s early birds were given no option but to start flying.

Roll on 1am and more than 700 revellers were poised, ready to erupt, for the night’s headliners. What was originally expected to be David August playing solo until 3, with Solomun taking over the reigns for the following two hours, soon evolved into a 4 hour back to back session, both DJs facing off in a cat and mouse game of one-upmanship. The masses responded. A highlight of Kaluki’s 5th anniversary celebrations so far the two conductors manipulated their fans to the point of frenzy. By this point the main room altar was becoming the scene of some serious dance worship.

With the rest of Manchester tucked up in bed the Sankeys faithful united well into Sunday morning. Pete Zorba took the mantle at 5 for the closing hour of the event, his tunes totally on point for those still reeling from the headliner’s efforts. A reluctant turning on of the house lights at 6 was met with the usual cries of ‘one more choooon’ rising from the dance floor and the DJ duly obliged. Finally pulling the plug close to 6.15 Zorba, along with his hedonistic entourage cramming the booth, brought an end to yet another triumphant Kaluki celebration……Roll on next Saturday……
