Sankeys next weekend - Just Skank and Kaluki

Sankeys serves up two cracking parties next weekend in Manchester.
The Friday sees a completely free entrance party showcasing the glorious talents of Manchester’s bass music scene. Rammed to the rafters with the heroes of the Mancunian music scene, the ideology rests with Sankeys giving something back to the clubbing fraternity which is such an important component of its longevity and success not only within the region, but on the global clubbing scale.

That vibe is channelled in a different manifesto with Kaluki’s hark back to the acid house era with a vinyl only evening on Saturday. Eschewing anything that wasn’t a staple of the aural aesthetic they’ve simply utilised a decks and mixer showcase; with all this firmly set on a stage. If that wasn’t enough a fancy dress theme, tied inextricably to acid house, is encouraged for everyone wanting to come down to the club.

Continue this Friday at Sankeys...

Lando Kal

Continue is one of Sankeys’ defining sessions of recent time which embodies its ethos right to the core, bringing in a stream of super-hot new names who are making huge waves in techno and future garage. Heading the bill is Lando Kal, the similarities name wise to the gun slinging Star Wars politician evident in the sci-fi garage melodies and textures dripping from the releases he has produced for Scuba’s Hotflush Recordings. The night also includes Edit Select, Damu [live], Irfan Rainy, Jozef K and many more taking over the legendary club.
Check www.sankeys.info for more info about this Friday's Continue action.

Sankeys this weekend...

The final weekend of May sees Sankeys saddle up with to two very different lynchpins of house music for another tour de force of contrast. With summer imminently around the corner and Sankeys about to embark on its second season in the Balearics, the focus closer to home also radiates of pure sunshine, with a DJ famed for his glorious transmission of feel-good vibes on the Friday and a set of Ibizan underground talismans the following day.

Friday is about one man and one man alone; Riva Starr. One of dance music’s chameleons, the ability to shift between differing spheres of dance music has marked Riva out as one of the leading lights within modern dance music with lofty comparisons often made, and justifiably so, to the original master Pete Tong. It’s not difficult to understand why; he manages to retain the underground vibes and values whilst cavorting with the more accessible strains of dance, all the while rapidly becoming the go to guy for radiating happiness through music.

He’s become one of the most important components of the WMC, and his recent Bateria Fantastica album on Defected was proof of his undeniable knack of delivering the finest in four-four grooves. Touted as ‘proper’ house music by everyone from Carl Cox to DJ Sneak (the latter having one or two things to say on the use of that word in recent times), he remains a true thoroughbred in a crowded ensemble of stars.

One day later and Sankeys will be madness; Pandemonium in fact. DC10’s Friday night institution has been at the centre of Ibiza showing that the weekend need not be the quietest segment of the week and proof that the club itself has a life beyond its glorious centre piece, Monday’s Circo Loco. 2011 saw them initiate a glut of Sankeys friendly bastions of house at their club, Dyed Soundorom, Kerri Chandler and Dan Ghenaica among the savvy jocks selected to bring some of the arcane madness DC10 has typified to a Friday in Ibiza.

It’s one of the pioneering forces behind Circo Loco that has been at the heartbeat of it all and the starlet who takes centre stage at Sankeys for the evening; Tania Vulcano. A firm fixture at Sankeys for nearly a decade (they were one of the first to recognise her glorious talents), she is joined by fellow Pandemonium residents DJ Qu and Garagem. Expect rawer than raw grooves direct form the underground, peppered with 90s house manoeuvres and jacking, visceral techno.

Sankeys next weekend...

Sankeys sails further into the future with another double helping of dance music to entice your ears throughout May. As ever it retains the perfect snapshot of contrast within club land, with Friday’s soiree looking longingly into the past whilst Saturday resounds to a more modern approach, still firmly rooted in the aesthetic and values which gift electronic music its rich heritage.

On Friday 18th May Sankeys will be going Retro. Now over a decade old, Paul Taylor’s Retro remains the perfect opportunity to reminisce. Cavorting through every major facet of dance music since the British became embroiled in the sound during the second summer of love, this is where everyone young or old goes to relive, revisit or simply have revealed the rich and varied electronic fingerprint music has indelibly left on our hearts.

Paul’s extended sets fly through classic Chicago house, debonair Detroit Techno, old school breaks and hardcore and allow the shards of rave to come shining through. Each and everyone represents a journey through the halcyon period of dance with lashings of vocals, rhythms and classics all segued together to create a sonorous explosion of timeless music.

Fuse soundtrack Saturday 19th May, their brand of hypnotic funk perfect for the Sankeys focus on underground dance music. Fuse has been built on the rich heritage and history of London’s afterhours scene, eschewing the usual weekend histrionics for a selection of daytime parties on the Sunday that focus more on slow building sets than superstar DJs. Think dubby house, swinging funk and shimmering slo-mo techno all filtering through the speakers.

Such has been the rapid rate of expansion that last summer saw their Ibizan adventures extend to three of the most heralded clubs on the island, Ushuaia, DC10 and of course, Sankeys. Here they are welcomed to show what they can do on home soil, residents Enzo Siragusa and Zito charged with the task of gifting Manchester their brand of sophisticated grooves and razor edged beats, with his Fuse brand dropping into Sankeys Ibiza for select dates during the forthcoming summer season; check out www.sankeysibiza.info
